UMF & MGO: Common Questions

UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) and MGO (methylglyoxal) measure related things, so each UMF grade corresponds to a minimum MGO level: UMF 5+ ≈ MGO 83, UMF 10+ ≈ MGO 263, UMF 15+ ≈ MGO 514, UMF 20+ ≈ MGO 829, and UMF 25+ ≈ MGO 1200. Our calculator interpolates between these official UMF Honey Association anchor points for any value in between.
No. MGO measures one compound, methylglyoxal, in milligrams per kilogram. UMF is a broader New Zealand grading system that tests four markers (MGO, DHA, leptosperin and HMF) and also certifies authenticity and freshness. A UMF rating tells you more than MGO alone, which is why UMF is considered the more complete trust signal.
UMF 15+ corresponds to a minimum of MGO 514 (mg/kg). It is regarded as a high-strength, therapeutic-grade Manuka honey suitable for targeted wellness use.
MGO 100 falls just below UMF 6+ on the correlation curve (UMF 5+ is MGO 83 and UMF 10+ is MGO 263). It is an everyday quality grade rather than a high-potency therapeutic one.
Look for a UMF number and a batch you can verify. UMF certification requires independent laboratory testing against four compounds, including an authenticity marker, so it is harder to fake than an MGO-only number. Every ApiHealth jar is independently lab-tested and traceable to its batch certificate.
