Women's bodies move through more change than almost any other, from monthly cycles to pregnancy, perimenopause and the decades beyond. For generations, women have turned to the hive to help smooth those transitions, long before anyone could explain the biology. Today the research is beginning to catch up, and bee products for women's health are having a quiet revival.
At ApiHealth we believe the future of apitherapy is not the bee sting itself, it is the science behind the bee. Royal jelly, bee pollen, propolis and Manuka honey each carry a distinct profile of nutrients and bioactive compounds, and several of them appear especially relevant to women. Here is what the evidence suggests, and how our New Zealand made range fits into a real routine. You can read more about our approach on our science hub.
What the science says about bee products for women's health
The appeal is straightforward: these are nutrient-dense whole foods, not single isolated chemicals. A 2022 clinical study in menopausal women found that honey enriched with bee pollen, royal jelly and propolis improved somatic, psychological and urogenital symptom scores more than plain honey, alongside measurable changes in antioxidant and hormone markers. A broad 2026 review of beehive products reached a more cautious conclusion, noting genuine promise but also inconsistent methods and a shortage of large human trials. Both things are true at once: the signal is encouraging, and the science is still maturing.
That honesty matters to us. We would rather tell you where the research is thin than overpromise. With that in mind, here is what stands out for women, ingredient by ingredient.
Royal jelly and hormonal balance
Royal jelly is the food that turns an ordinary larva into a queen, and it is the most studied bee product in women's health. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis in the journal Menopause pooled six trials in 471 postmenopausal women and found royal jelly supplementation was associated with a meaningful improvement in menopausal symptoms compared with placebo. Individual randomized trials have reported that daily royal jelly, at roughly 800 to 1000 mg, may ease symptoms such as anxiety, backache and low mood over several weeks.
Laboratory work offers a plausible mechanism: royal jelly shows weak estrogen-like activity, binding estrogen receptors far more gently than the body's own hormones. Research has also linked it to premenstrual comfort and general wellbeing. It is not a hormone therapy and should not be treated as one, and the evidence is not unanimous, one trial found it did not relieve genitourinary symptoms such as vaginal dryness. Even so, for women who cannot or prefer not to use hormone therapy, royal jelly is a reasonable, well-tolerated option to explore with a health professional.
Our New Zealand Royal Jelly tablets pair fresh royal jelly with New Zealand colostrum. You can read more on the royal jelly ingredient page.
The science behind the bee is quietly rewriting what natural support can mean for women at every stage of life.
Bee pollen: a nutrient-dense superfood for busy lives
If royal jelly is the specialist, bee pollen is the everyday all-rounder. It is often called one of nature's most complete foods, containing over 250 biologically active substances, including protein, all the essential amino acids, B vitamins, vitamin C, iron and other minerals, plus antioxidant polyphenols. For women juggling demanding schedules, or those who feel run down around their cycle, that broad nutritional base is the main appeal.
Bee pollen also contains phytosterols with mild plant-based estrogenic activity, and early animal research has explored its role in hormonal balance and conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome. Human evidence here is still limited, so we frame this as promising rather than proven. What is clear is that bee pollen is a genuine food-based way to top up everyday nutrition. ApiHealth breaks the tough outer casing of each grain so more of those nutrients are available to your body. Explore it further on the bee pollen page.
Propolis and Manuka honey for immunity and skin
Two more hive ingredients round out a women's routine. Propolis, the resin bees use to defend the hive, is rich in flavonoids and is traditionally used to support the immune system and a normal, healthy inflammatory response. Manuka honey, New Zealand's signature, is valued for soothing sore throats, supporting digestion and everyday immunity, and it has a long history in skin care too.
Because women's immune needs shift with hormonal changes, sleep and stress, having gentle daily support on hand is useful through the seasons. Our Manuka ProVENZ combines Manuka honey with propolis, while a straightforward UMF 15+ Manuka honey is an easy daily teaspoon. You can check how we test and certify every batch at our trust centre.
Building a simple women's wellness routine
You do not need a cabinet full of jars. A practical, whole-hive routine might look like this:
- Morning nutrition: a spoon of Manuka honey or bee pollen for a food-based nutrient and antioxidant top-up.
- Hormonal and life-stage support: royal jelly through perimenopause and menopause, discussed with your health professional.
- Seasonal immunity: propolis, or a Manuka and propolis formula, through the cooler months.
- Restful evenings: a Manuka and valerian formula an hour before bed when sleep feels elusive.
For an easy starting point, our Womens' Health Pack brings royal jelly, a deer velvet and bee pollen tincture, and our Pro-Pollen extract together in one New Zealand made set, so the three pillars of hormonal support, nutrition and immunity are covered without guesswork. It sits alongside the rest of our wellness supplements.
A few cautions matter. Anyone with a bee, pollen or propolis allergy should avoid these products and seek medical advice first. Honey is still a sugar, so people managing diabetes should keep that in mind and seek personalised advice, and it should never be given to infants under 12 months. Bee products complement good medical care, they do not replace it, especially during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or while taking medication.

Frequently asked questions
Are bee products safe for women during menopause?
For most healthy women they are generally well tolerated, and royal jelly in particular has been studied in postmenopausal women. If you have a bee or pollen allergy, take medication, or have a hormone-sensitive condition, talk to your health professional before starting.
Which bee product is best for hormonal balance?
Royal jelly has the most research behind it for menopausal symptoms and hormonal wellbeing, thanks to its gentle estrogen-like activity. Bee pollen adds broad nutritional support. Many women use them together rather than choosing one.
Can royal jelly help with menopause symptoms?
Research suggests it may. A 2025 review of six trials found royal jelly was associated with reduced menopausal symptoms overall, although results are not unanimous and it is not a replacement for hormone therapy. It is best viewed as a complementary option to discuss with your doctor.
Is bee pollen good for women's energy and nutrition?
Bee pollen is a nutrient-dense food rich in B vitamins, amino acids, iron and antioxidants, which is why it is popular for everyday nutritional support. ApiHealth breaks the pollen casing so more of those nutrients are bioavailable.
Can I take these bee products while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Speak to your midwife or doctor first. Some ingredients, including royal jelly and herbal extracts, are best used with professional guidance during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and honey should never be given to babies under 12 months.

The bottom line
Bee products will not solve everything, but for many women they offer a gentle, food-based layer of support: royal jelly for life-stage changes, bee pollen for everyday nutrition, and propolis and Manuka honey for immunity and skin. The evidence is early but encouraging, and it points back to the idea that guides us. The real power of the hive is not the sting, it is the science behind the bee.
